:eek:Honda recalls cars in fire danger

From today's BBC website ~

Honda has announced the recall of 646,000 cars globally to fix a switch defect that could cause a fire.

The recall includes Jazz models, also known as Fit in some countries, built in Japan, China, Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia and India, Honda said.

Three cases of fires due to the defect have so far been reported - two in the US and one in South Africa.

In September, two-year-old Vanilla Nurse was killed in Cape Town when the car she was sleeping in caught fire.

The total number of recalls includes 619,000 Jazz, or Fit, models globally and 27,000 City models in Asia.

In the US, 140,000 vehicles are being recalled. Just over 171,000 Jazz cars in Britain will be recalled in March.

In a statement, Honda said a defective master switch could cause water to enter the power window switch and could, in some cases, cause a fire.

On Thursday, carmaker Toyota announced the recall of vehicles in the US, Europe and China over concerns about accelerator pedals getting stuck on floor mats.

:eek:A Honda recall announced Friday affects 646,000 of the Japanese automaker's compact Fit hatchbacks of the 2007-2008 model year. Roughly a fifth of the vehicles are in the United States, according to a report by the Dow Jones Newswires. Models from 2009-10 are not affected.

The problem involves the driver's master power-window switch. It can overheat and cause fire when it makes contact with "excessive" liquid, Honda says, like a heavy rain, for example. Seven such incidents have been confirmed in the US, none causing human harm, says Honda spokeswoman Christina Ra. A person was killed in South Africa in 2009 in what Honda suspects was a problem with the switch, Ms. Ra said, although the fire damage to the car was too great to ascertain the root cause of the problem.

So what should you do if your Honda Fit is on the recall list?

Ra says Fit drivers should be conscious about just how much liquid gets on the switch, but she added that only "extreme" amounts could trigger a problem. Drivers are not advised to bring their cars in to dealers just yet, because they don't yet have the requisite parts. Only 10 percent of the models will need new switches, according to the Dow Jones article, while the rest will require the installation of a water-tight skirt to keep the switch dry.

Fit owners will soon receive a mailing from the company with further instructions, Ra said.

A Monitor staffer who drives a Honda Fit noted that the car's sleek design makes for a shallow angle between the interior driver-side door and the roof, letting rain fall directly into the car with the window down. The Fit can be equipped with door visors for about $75.

Thanks again Lion. The GE folks don't have to wait for a recall letter because it won't come- we aren't involved (nyaah, nyaah!) . The last paragraph is comforting to the GD guys- if you don't already have them, get visors and install them, and just wait to be called in for the warranty fix.

Thanks to lion18939 for sharing the good and the bad news!

Whew looks like mine is too old to have the problem. It could be a bitch here when it's rainy season. It is a problem because the roofline is so far back into the car when you open the door and it does let water down into that area.

That's kind of why I never buy first yr models ie: 2010 instead of 2009, also, that door leak problem that some ppl have been having with their GE's, I have not had anything like that yet and I've washed my car multiple times, also in snow no leaks yet.

RE: 2007~2008 Fit Master Window Switch Melting

On January 27, 2010, American Honda announced a Stop Sale order and Safety Recall on all 2007~2008 Fit models. Any unsold units in used car inventory will need to be inspected and repaired.

Note: All 2007~2008 Fits in your inventory are affected by this recall. You should not sell these vehicles until they have been inspected and repaired. Should an unrepaired vehicle cause an injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. Any Fit in used car inventory sold prior to the posting of the Service Bulletin will require the application of the countermeasure parts.

Basic Problem
If the driver’s power window master switch is subjected to rainfall (window left open) or a beverage is spilled, liquid can enter the switch and migrate to the printed circuit board. The liquid can create a short circuit that will damage the printed circuit board or cause the switch to melt in a localized area.

Campaign Information
The Service Bulletin will be posted March 15th. The customer mailing will begin the next day March 16th. The daily customer mailings will increase as on-hand parts inventory increases.

Parts Information
The following parts will be used in this recall: protective skirt - 35751-SAA-305 and 35751-SAA-307, switch kit – 35752-SAA-406ZA and harnesses – 32751-SLN-A00 (Base) and 32751-SLN-A10 (Sport).

After inspection, a protective skirt will be installed or in a limited number of cases (less than 10%), a switch kit (switch and skirt) may be required. In a very limited number of cases (less than 1%), the harness may also need to be replaced due to corrosion.

Parts are available for open dealer ordering, except for the harnesses which are controlled parts.

Warranty Information
Warranty information has been provided in the Service Bulletin. Please use the exact claim coding when filing a claim to insure the system counts the vehicle repaired.

I still haven't taken my Goldwing in for a 2003 recall.
