I plan to store my '09 Fit in an unheated barn to keep it out of winter salt. I want to remove the battery and keep it charged in my home. Any danger in doing so? Will I mess up a few computers (or something) by leaving power off the system for about 6 months?

The question was prompted by a problem with my '98 VW New Beetle Diesel. Loss of battery power made necessary a tow to the dealer to re-program the engine control computer. Would the same thing happen to my Fit, when I remove the battery, or am I OK to re-install the battery in the spring and GO?

Appreciate any help.

Thanks.

polecat73,
Hundreds of Fit-owning members of several forums have posted about removing their battery for mods installation, maintenance tasks (changing the AT filter underneath the battery tray), and installing heavier duty batteries. I have removed mine several times for up to a couple of days. The answer to your question is, your car will be fine and suffer no damage from removing the battery for as long as you want to.

Just don't store the battery for a long time in freezing conditions (and you didn't say that that was your intention).

Thank you, Manxman for the rapid reply. My Fit thanks you too. Of course I do intend to keep that tiny battery in my home for the winter on trickle charge. I appreciate your help very much.

polecat73,
When you start driving again, you might have to re-enter your radio code to get your "sounds" back. My code was listed in the owner's manual.

PS-Some say that the code can be found somewhere in the glove box...IDK, but you might want to check in there.

Needing to re-enter the radio code is an absolute fact. It's in the owner's manual and on the side of the glove box.

Leaving the battery out long term will not cause any problems. I would turn the key to hot ignition position # 2 and let the fuel pump run for 10-15 seconds on first start.

Don't forget to NOT put your battery onto a cement floor... put it on a bench or piece of wood under it to keep it off the floor. Don't know the reasons behind it but I was taught that it will drain the charge faster if it's directly on the floor. Never could figure out the physics of it but it happens I know I just had to try it myself.

To be reset after disconnecting battery: Radio code, radio preset stations, time, window auto-up, Ecu will reset, idle learn will reset itself. You can speed up the idle learn by just letting it idle with everything electrical turned off until the fans turn on and off twice.
