View Full Version : 2010 Fit Sport:engine cover and PS reservoir

You can tell by the title that my 2010 Fit Sport is giving me a ... . When raising the hood on most cars with engine covers, how to remove them is fairly obvious; that was the case with my 2003 Odyssey. Not so with my Fit. So my first question is: is removal a DIY task, and if so, what are the steps, and should I get a new prescription for my glasses or, to show my paranoia, is this another step by Honda to force me into its repair facilities?
Second, when raising the hood, finding the power steering reservoir is easy; not so with the fit. As above, is it hiding in plain sight and I need new glasses, or is something else going on?
I may find your answers embarrassing, but that is okay, it comes with my territory.
Thanks,
curio.

Sorry, I am too busy working on my wife's Scion to check my '09 Fit for the engine cover removal method (at the moment). But you might need better glasses to read your owner's manual though, where it tells you that you have electric power steering. You can't see a p/s reservoir because it doesn't exist. I'm not trying to insult you here, but forums have a handy little expression: "RTFM". When I have more time, I will look in my '09 Fit Service Manual to find out how to remove the engine cover and will post it here.

Now I am afraid that I will be of less help than I promised in the above post. The Service Manual for the GE8 Fits is the absolute worst designed manual I have ever seen. It is as thick as a Los Angeles County telephone book, but does not have an index, and does not even have page numbers. I looked through it for at least 10 minutes, under the chapters labeled "Engine, Mechanical" and "Engine, Electrical", and found no illustration showing an "engine cover" similar to the cover used on the GD3 Fits.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest to you that the GE8's do not have engine covers. The flat black plastic piece on the top of the engine is apparently the top of the intake manifold. I get angry enough trying to use this POS manual when I have a job to do on my own '09 Fit, and I have exhausted my patience in trying to find proof of my statement, but I believe that we don't have engine covers. If anyone else can prove me wrong in that statement, please be my guest.

Thanks for taking the time to check out the maintenance manual and regret that you found it so infuriating. Although far less qualified to draw inferences than you, I was tempted to come to the same conclusion. It sure makes changing plugs and investigating ignition coils dicey to say nothing about investigating other performance related issues. Hope your wrestling with the Scion went well.

Well, the Scion now has fresh synthetic oil and oil filter, and brand new billet aluminum grille panels to keep rocks from punching holes in the A/C condenser (just like on my '09 Fit)
Regarding plugs and coil packs on your Fit- not such bad news. You can either take off the black plastic cowl panels at the top of the firewall and reach over the engine for plug work, or you can reach around from the left side of the engine (woops! excuse mee- in correct mechanic-speak, positions on a car are given from the driver's seat- so I meant from the RIGHT side) and work blind, one-handed, by feel. The Service Manual says to remove the upper and lower cowl panels. They are fastened with plastic mushroom clips like the ones used for the plastic panel between the radiator support and grille (surrounding the hood latch.
When you decide to remove that bridge panel, (like to install a REAL horn, maybe) make sure to replace those clips in exactly the same holes they came out of- there are different sizes of clips, but they all look the same from the top.
Oh, I forgot-- welcome to our forums, curio!

Can't help but think that you and your wife feel better about the ability of the
Scion to deal with the dangers of everyday life. Your news about the Fit is comforting in its own way, so thanks for the extra work and advice. A very nice welcome indeed. For what it may be worth to you, your conclusion about the absence of an engine cover was seconded by a moderator of another Fit forum.

Oh, who dat? JDMchris perhaps? I know that other forum quite well. And, I much prefer the Fit over her refrigerator crate.

I wish I had kept tabs on who said it, but whoever it was is a moderator at fitfreak. I'll search again tomorrow to see if I can find the exact comment. It was cryptic.

Then it sounds more like gimme- doesn't matter. The worst moderator the freak site ever had doesn't show up there anymore. He is too busy now wrecking one or more Subaru sites. His daddy took away his Fit. If he backed up the "no engine cover on GE's", then I would know that I was wrong.

In response to an old thread, Vtecfit1 said--no cover.

Oh yeah, the guy from Utah- more intelligent than most of the freak mods.

Thanks everybody for the confirmation of the missing engine cover. In my first post on the subject, I was trying to be gentle with curio, since I had already embarrassed him about the reason for the "missing" p/s pump. I noticed the lack of engine cover the first day I had my '09, but didn't want to further belabor his newbie status. I did use the manual to get an accurate description of the shiny black plastic top of the intake manifold. Personally, I am glad that there is no "engine cover", because the one on the GD3 serves no purpose at all.
